PNE Vodcast: 1994 Torquay United Play-Off Semi-Final Special

18 May 2020

It is 26 years ago today that North End became the first club to overturn a 2-0 deficit in a Play-Off semi-final, as they celebrated the final game on the plastic pitch in style.

The Lilywhites defeated former Lilywhites’ player of the year Don O’Riordan’s Torquay United 4-1 at Deepdale, with the fans doing the club’s job post-match, by ripping up the surface as mementos of the occasion.

Goals from Tony Ellis, David Moyes, Stuart Hicks and a 116th minute winner from Paul Raynor gave John Beck’s men the result that sent them to Wembley for the first time in 30 years.
And to commemorate the game we managed to get six of the starting XI that night to join us to look back on the evening.
The aforementioned match-winner Paul Raynor, fellow scorer David Moyes, Ian Bryson, Lee Cartwright, Andy Fensome and Gareth Ainsworth all joined us on Zoom to recall the motivating factors on the night, the celebrations and everyone gives their own opinion on Paul Raynor’s entanglement with Darren Moore!

Just click on the video at the top of the page to watch the chat and see if your memories of what was a special night under the old Deepdale floodlights is reflected in the thoughts of those who played in the game.
