Match Report: Huddersfield Town 1 PNE 0

17 August 2021

Huddersfield Town secured a 1-0 victory over Preston North End at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Terriers went ahead with just over 15 minutes left to play, as on-loan Liverpool man Sepp van den Berg inadvertently put the ball into the back of his own net when Duane Holmes went through on goal.

The Lilywhites made four changes from the weekend's trip to Reading, as Josh Earl, Ben Whiteman, Brad Potts and Ched Evans came into the starting line-up in West Yorkshire.

PNE enjoyed all the early chances, with Potts seeing a close range effort blocked just two minutes in, while Daniel Johnson had a left-footed strike deflected just wide on nine minutes after dispossessing Levi Colwill.

Evans was then not too far away himself when a Potts cross, flicked on by a Huddersfield head, fell to the forward but his volley flew over the top of goal.

Just after the half hour mark, Evans had the best chance of the game yet, as an Earl cross made its way through everybody in the box before reaching the Welshman, who took his time before taking aim, but Sarr was on the goal-line to keep it out.

At the other end, Josh Koroma took on a hopeful effort from just short of 30 yards which took a huge defection off of Andrew Hughes and that change of direction almost caught out goalkeeper Daniel Iversen, however, the ball landed wide of his right-hand post.

Lee Nicholls was then called into action five minutes before the break as Sarr’s block on Potts’ shot fell for Whiteman on the edge of the box, the No.4 curling a shot goalwards with the ‘keeper was equal to it.

PNE probably felt they edged the play as they headed into the break and they were certainly on top when they came back out, dominating proceedings in the first 15 minutes.

It was Huddersfield, though, who took the lead with 74 minutes on the clock, as van den Berg looked to nick in ahead of the on-rushing Holmes, but in doing so the ball was sent beyond Iversen in the PNE goal.

The hosts almost doubled their lead soon after, but Sorba Thomas’ effort cutting in from the left came back out off the post.

Frankie McAvoy made attacking changes after going a goal down, with Emil Riis, Scott Sinclair and Sean Maguire entering the fray, but the game ended with the score at 1-0.
