A Match To Remember: Huddersfield Town

25 February 2021

It's five years ago, astonishingly, since the game we look back to for our latest blast from the past, as now club captain Alan Browne grabbed a last-ditch winner to earn PNE victory over the Terriers.

The visitors started brightly and went close to scoring when Nakhi Wells slipped Harry Bunn through on goal, but Anders Lindegaard saved with his legs.

Huddersfield broke the deadlock with just ten minutes to go when Wells beat an onrushing Lindegaard, but Paul Gallagher's strike then deflected off Joel Lynch to level the score before Browne rose highest to head in Calum Woods' cross in injury time.

The visitors, who were then without a win in five, looked dangerous on the break and Wells was denied numerous times by the work of Lilywhites goalkeeper Lindegaard.

Huddersfield had scored more goals in the last 15 minutes of games than any other Championship side and finally went ahead when Wells struck his 11th league goal of the season, but their lead lasted just three minutes as an unfortunate Lynch saw the ball roll into the back of his own net.

Wells came close to restoring the Terriers' lead, but his 20-yard strike went inches wide and midfielder Browne headed home from six yards to give PNE all three points.

Then manager Simon Grayson said afterwards: "We kept going, got fortunate with the own goal and then Browney made his way into the box very late like he did for the team meeting at half past one.

"He had a puncture on the motorway. He'll be celebrating tonight, but will be reprimanded after the weekend with a fine. It is club rules, he's lucky other managers might not have played him, but he came up with the goods, so it won't be as severe as it maybe would have been!"

Huddersfield manager David Wagner added: "There is frustration and disappointment. This is one of the harder days since we started our journey three months ago.

"It is so hard and frustrating because the gap between our performance and our result is unbelievably big. In my opinion the lads did a very good performance and played great football."
