Molumby: “That Showed What We’re About”

20 January 2021

Jayson Molumby said Preston North End’s 1-0 win against Birmingham City showed what the team were about as they dug deep to earn all three points at St Andrew’s.

Both sides battled amid difficult conditions in the West Midlands but the Lilywhites came out of the blocks quickly in the second half and Scott Sinclair struck within 20 minutes of the second half restart, which was enough to earn victory for the visitors.

Molumby, making his first league start for the club since joining on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this month, told iFollow PNE of his delight to pick up the win at full-time.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” he said. “The boys, before I came here, the gaffer told me what they’re about, and they’re a hard-working group of lads and they showed it tonight. I think everyone to a man dug deep and we deserved to win in the end.

“I just try to do my best every time I go on the pitch and try to give my all for the team and just try to pick up points, win games. Thankfully, I could help do that tonight.”

Having charged forward on the counter and supplied the assist for Sinclair’s winner, the 21-year-old explained his thought process after picking up the ball on the halfway line from his team-mate’s flick, before driving forward and playing the return ball to the No.31.

“Scotty gave it, I kind of knew what he was going to do because he’s a quality player, he has that to be able to flick that around the corner.

“I just drove into the box and knew Scotty was on the outside, kind of delayed, waited for the right opportunity and then Scotty’s an unbelievable finish, which he’s done throughout his career.”

With this the Irishman’s first win since his arrival a matter of weeks ago, the midfielder admitted it was an important result not only for him, but the entire team as well.

“It helps the team settle,” he continued. “I think that was a big win for us, especially away from home given the conditions and the nature of the game. That showed what we were about and we’re really pleased.

“I couldn’t believe it really when seven minutes [added time in the second half] went up, I’m not sure where they got that from. Credit to the boys, they’re hanging on and hanging in there, and they gave everything and, in the end, saw it out. It’s a big win.

“We want to try to get a bit of momentum now and keep picking up points and wins and hopefully we can do that again at the weekend.”
