Ben Woodburn called it “the perfect day” after scoring his first Championship goal in a 4-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers.
The Welshman – who scored in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season – got off the mark in the league 17 minutes in to the Lancashire derby at Ewood Park, after being played through on goal by Ched Evans.
Woodburn then played a part in setting up Evans’ first of the game, before he got another and Ben Whiteman made it four.
Asked to sum up the day, Ben said: “Unbelievable. It was the perfect day really.
“A 4-1 win in a derby game; it’s just amazing.
“It just shows what kind of a group we’ve got. We all stuck together and to put in a performance like that, it was just one of those days.”
North End were right at it from the start, and Ben’s goal came about after Ryan Ledson – fresh from signing a new deal – played a great ball through to Evans, who in turn played in Woodburn.
The 23-year-old kept his cool and sent a brilliant finish past Thomas Kaminski, before wheeling away to celebrate in front of the home support.
On the feeling of scoring, he said: “It was unbelievable. In this game as well, it was a special feeling.
“I think we were pressing well as a team and Leds [Ryan Ledson] won it back.
“He played it straight to Ched and his weight of pass was straight to my back foot, and it was a good touch to be fair, and I just stuck it away and it was a great feeling.”
At the end of the game, the whole squad – including those who missed out through injury – went over to celebrate in front of the 4,270 PNE fans who made the journey to Ewood.
Ben added: “That’s what you want, celebrating with the away fans.
“It was a good day and I’m glad they enjoyed it. We put it on for them.
“After a tough day’s work, it feels good to go over and celebrate with the fans.”
