Ben Looking To Reward PNE Fans In Spain

11 July 2022

Ben Whiteman feels the huge number of North End fans travelling to Campoamor to watch the Getafe friendly are a testament to the football club.

Many of the PNE faithful are expected to be in attendance on Tuesday morning when the lads take on La Liga side Getafe at 10.45am local time.

At least 300 fans will be there to cheer on their side in Europe, and many have taken over the nearby towns and cities already – Benidorm in particular, if social media is anything to go by.

Speaking to iFollow PNE, Ben said: “It’s obviously a great testament to the football club that the fans are coming over here.

“Hopefully they’re going to enjoy the game, but like I said pre-season is about getting minutes into the legs.

“Obviously they’ve come over here and made the trip, so hopefully we can get a positive result.”

In Getafe, PNE face a side who finished 15th in the Spanish top flight last season.

They’ve done better than that previously, reaching the heights of third in 2016/17, however they did get a victory over Real Madrid in January 2022.

“Obviously they’re going to move the ball very well,” Ben added. “They play against the top sides in Spain so they’re going to be good players.

“But like I said before, it’s about what we do, getting minutes in the legs and gearing up for the first game of the season.”

The camp in Spain has certainly gone some way to aid that preparation for the new campaign, with plenty of training done in the warm weather.

“It’s been a tough couple of days,” Ben admitted. “Today was sort of build up towards the game tomorrow.

“Obviously it’s different over here, the heat’s obviously really hot and that makes it tough.

“Like I said before, today was about tomorrow’s game and everyone’s really looking forward to it.”
