Five Substitutions Introduced Ahead Of 2022/23 Season

10 June 2022

It has been confirmed by the EFL that clubs will be able to make five substitutions in Football League matches as of the start of the 2022/23 season.

During the last campaign, clubs were able to use three substitutions from seven named on the bench.

However, from the start of next season and going forward, each club will be permitted a maximum of three opportunities to make five substitutions during a league fixture.

Clubs can make more than one substitution during each of the three windows, while substitutions made at half-time will not count towards the three opportunities.

The EFL have also confirmed that home clubs will be able to wear their away or third kit if a clash was set to occur which would make it difficult for people who are colour blind to differentiate between the two teams’ kits.
