Pemberton Grabs Two Assists In Rochdale Win

15 November 2022

Preston North End U19s winger Rio Pemberton assisted the first two goals in his side’s 4-1 win away at Rochdale.

Playing at left wing-back, his cross on 37 minutes was glanced home by Mikey O’Neill to open the scoring.

Then, ten minutes after the break, he popped up on the right and sent in another superb delivery which was met with an excellent volley by Cole McGhee to double PNE’s advantage.

Pemberton was delighted to have made such a big contribution in the win, saying to PNE.Com: “I got two assists, and I was pleased to increase my tally for the season.

“I got myself into some good positions at times and the end product was there.

“I could’ve got a few more assists as well but it’s always good to come away with some goal involvements.”

Despite the eventual scoreline looking comfortable, it was actually a hard-fought three points for the Lilywhites.

Pemberton believed there were certain aspects of the game which made things difficult for him and his teammates but he was pleased with how they managed them.

“It wasn’t the best of surfaces,” said the 17-year-old. “We had to adapt to the pitch because it’s not something that we’re used to. It was a good learning experience.

“We made it more difficult than we needed to but at the end of the day, we came away with the win and that’s all that matters.”

More often that not this season, Pemberton has been employed in the left wing-back role rather than his more familiar right wing-back role.

He feels he is adjusting to the position, adding: “It was different playing at left wing-back but at the same time there’s lots of similarities to playing on the right-hand side.

“If anything, it can be a bit easier at times because I’m right-footed so there’s the option to cross with my left or maybe come inside and shoot or cross with my right so there’s a variety there for me.”
