Gaffer Reflects On Two Years So Far At Preston North End

7 December 2023

On the second anniversary of his appointment as Preston North End manager, Ryan Lowe said his time with the club so far has been the most enjoyable years he’s had in management.

The North End boss walked through the Deepdale doors in December 2021 and during that time has taken charge of almost 100 matches.

“It’s been a good rollercoaster,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed every day of it, every minute of it.

“We’ve had a lot more good times than bad. Albeit we’re in a bit of a bad patch in terms of performances and results of late, but what a fantastic football club to work for, with fantastic people.

“The fans have been great to me; they’ve been excellent. We get the frustrations at times of course, but it’s been probably the most enjoyable couple of years I’ve had in management.

“There have been some good times, some tough times, some okay times, but that’s why I’m in management.

“To manage a fantastic football club like Preston North End is a privilege.”

The Lilywhites are, however, three without a win at the moment as they prepare for a trip to East Anglia this weekend to take on Norwich City.

PNE have come through similar periods under Lowe and gone on to turn fortunes around, and the gaffer is confident the same can be done again.

Ryan said: “It's another bump in the road and we need to fill it in as quickly as we possibly can.

“I have a saying: ‘Tough times don’t last, tough people do’, and I’d like to think I’m one of those tough people from where I’ve been brought up, and my coaching staff and the group of players. They’re tough lads.

“We understand it’s not been good enough, we take responsibility for that, but we know this group of players have got some fantastic quality and they’ve picked up some fantastic results along the way.

“The quicker we get back to the fundamentals and believing how good we can be then the quicker we’ll start picking points up again.

“This week is another tough week which you’re always going to get in management and it’s one we’ll come out of very shortly, and it’s one we’ll start picking up points again which I’m a massive believer of.”

North End will again be without Milutin Osmajić for the trip to Carrow Road, although the forward could be in contention on Tuesday night for the Huddersfield Town clash.

There were a few issues in the camp last time PNE faced Norwich City away as some of the players were struggling with a sickness bug, but that proved not to be a problem as they returned to Lancashire with a 3-2 comeback victory.

Ryan added: “We probably went down to Norwich with people not giving us a chance of winning the game of football, and maybe that might be the case again this time round.

“Where Norwich are this season, they’ve obviously underperformed and David will understand that.

“They’ve had some fantastic wins of late and they’re getting back on track to where they want to be.

“He’s a fantastic manager and they’ve got some fantastic players as we know, ex-Premier League players, players who have been at Norwich for a while, but we’ve got some good players as well and that’s the key to it.”
