Match Report: PNE 2 Aberdeen 0

22 July 2023

Mads Frøkjær scored a brace in just his second match for Preston North End as the Lilywhites beat Aberdeen 2-0 at Deepdale.

The Danish international, who made his bow for the club against Ipswich Town during the week, got off the mark in the seventh minute with a great finish in off the post.

His second of the game was an equally impressive strike just over ten minutes later in what was an impressive display both personally and as a team.

Youngsters Kian Best and Kian Taylor both started on the day, while there were debuts for new signings Calvin Ramsay, Duane Holmes and Layton Stewart off the bench.

Frøkjær got North End going just seven minutes in, receiving the ball from Potts on the edge of the box and taking aim, sending a curling effort in off the right-hand post.

Aberdeen’s first real attack came 16 minutes in as Bambo Diaby lost out to Ester Sokler, but his tame effort was easily kept out by Freddie Woodman.

A couple of minutes later Frøkjær had his second of the match and it was again Potts with the assist. The right wing back found the Danish midfielder in a pocket of space just outside the area and he took a touch before sending it low into the bottom corner.

North End’s No.10 could well have had a hat-trick before half-time were it not for Kelle Roos, who tipped his 18-yard effort over the bar.

Ylber Ramadani had an opportunity nine minutes into the second period to halve the deficit, but his header on the end of Jonny Hayes’ cross went into the Kop, which held over 1,300 visiting supporters.

On the day of his signing, former Liverpool forward Stewart tried his luck at getting a goal to mark his first appearance for the club, flicking goalwards from six yards, but it didn’t quite have enough pace on it to trouble the ‘keeper.

There was certainly no lack of power from Ryan Ledson when he hit a thumping strike on 76 minutes which was bravely blocked by Nicky Devlin inside the area.

Defender Jack MacKenzie then almost gifted North End a third eight minutes from time as he volleyed Jacob Slater’s cross just over his own bar, before Stewart had a late effort saved, but the match ended 2-0 in favour of the Whites.
