International Preview: March 2023

22 March 2023

Six Preston North End players are spending the international break away with their respective countries.

Alan Browne, Daniel Johnson and Troy Parrott are each in contention to feature for their nation's senior side, while Liam Delap, Tom Cannon and PNE U19 defender Harry Nevin will play at youth level for their countries.

Browne and Parrott were both called up to the Republic of Ireland national side once more, ahead of two home games.

The first will take place at 7.45pm on Wednesday 22nd March as they welcome Latvia for an international friendly, to prepare them for the start of their qualification campaign for Euro 2024.

They’ll host Qatar World Cup finalists France in a qualifier on Monday 27th March, with a kick-off time of 7.45pm, and Browne – who scored against Norway in the last international break – will look to earn a 28th cap for his nation, while Parrott is searching for his 18th.

Sticking with Republic of Ireland, at U21 level Cannon could make his debut for that age group on Sunday 26th March (4pm) when the boys in green host Iceland U21s in an international friendly at Turner’s Cross, Cork.

Cannon, who has netted three times for PNE in the past month, has previously represented and scored for the U20s.

Young defender Nevin will spend the next week with Republic of Ireland’s U19s as they look to earn a place at this summer’s Euros in Malta.

Ireland U19s will firstly host Slovakia U19s at Wexford at 3.30pm on Wednesday 22nd March, before then facing Estonia U19s at 3.30pm on Saturday 25th March and Greece U19s at 7.30pm on Tuesday 28th March.

Only the winners of each of the seven groups will qualify to reach this summer’s tournament, joining hosts Malta.

Elsewhere, midfielder Johnson will take part in a CONCACAF Nations League clash for Jamaica.

The Reggae Boyz will face Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on the evening of Sunday 26th March, which will fall at 1am in the UK on Monday 27th March.

Jamaica currently top the three-nation group and, were they to finish at the summit, they will qualify for the Nations League finals in June 2023.

Finally, Manchester City loanee Delap has been called up to the England U20 side who will play three international friendlies in the next week.

Liam – who made his debut and scored for the U20s in September 2022 – will be in familiar surroundings on Wednesday 22nd March (7.30pm) when the Young Lions face Germany at the Manchester City Academy Stadium.

They will then play twice at the Marbella Football Centre, facing USA for a 3pm kick-off on Saturday 25th March and at the same time on Tuesday 28th March.

Good luck, boys!
