International Round-Up: March 2023

29 March 2023

Five Preston North End players featured for their nation during the international break, with the biggest success story being Tom Cannon who netted on his debut for Republic of Ireland U21.

The Everton loanee started for the young Boys in Green in a friendly against Iceland U21 in Cork last Sunday and, after falling behind, he brought his side level with a nice finish one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

After being substituted on 75 minutes, Shamrock Rovers man Johnny Kenny then went on to win the game late on – despite Ireland playing with ten men for the majority of the game.

Elsewhere, Alan Browne and Troy Parrott both featured for the Ireland senior team in their victory at home to Latvia.

Robbie Brady was then called up to the camp ahead of their Euro qualification opener against France, but it was only skipper Browne who featured against last year’s World Cup finalists.

The midfielder came off the bench late on in the game, with Ireland trailing by a single goal to nil, and he played a part in Stephen Kenny’s side piling some late pressure on the French goal, but the equaliser didn’t quite arrive.

Daniel Johnson was also in action for his country, Jamaica, playing 83 minutes for the Reggae Boyz as they drew 2-2 with Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League.

As a result of the point, Jamaica secured a place in the Gold Cup taking place this summer.

Liam Delap featured in two of three games this break for England U20, firstly coming off the bench in a 2-0 win over Germany in Manchester, before playing over an hour in a 1-1 draw against France in Marbella on Tuesday.

Finally, Harry Nevin has spent the past week away with Republic of Ireland U19 as they looked to seal a place in this summer’s Euros taking place in Malta, but the defender was an unused sub in all three games and they were knocked out at the Elite Round stage.
