Match Report: Wrexham AFC 2 PNE Reserves 2

24 March 2023

Preston North End reserves came from two goals down to earn a point against Wrexham in the Central League at Springfields.

Wrexham, who were officially the home team, raced ahead inside 11 minutes thanks to strikes from Jake Bickerstaff and Scott Butler.

North End had one back through an improvised Dana Amaral backheel 26 minutes in, before captain Noah Mawene levelled the game late on.

On a wild and blustery day at Springfields, Wrexham took the lead with just six minutes on the clock as the ball was slotted through to Bickerstaff, who in turn found the bottom corner.

It was two just five minutes later when central defender Butler was allowed time on the edge of the area to slam past James Pradic.

North End got one back in the 26th minute after a bit of a scramble in the box, with the ball falling to Amaral who smartly backheeled towards goal and the linesman indicated the ball had crossed the line.

At the other end, left wing back Dan Davies tried his luck with a few minutes left in the half, but a strong left hand from Pradic ensured the sides went into the break at 2-1.

North End could and perhaps should have had the chance to level the scoring from the spot just two minutes into the second half, with Kitt Nelson seemingly being brought down by the goalkeeper, but the referee waved away the appeals.

PNE were the side on top and seeing more of the ball, but without creating any major opportunities, until Kai Calerbank-Park was called into action midway through the half by Mawene, who had taken the ball down well before striking at goal.

Inside 30 seconds, Wrexham had made their way down the other end and Dan Jones produced a good stop out of Pradic, before Louis Lloyd sliced a follow-up effort wide.

Ethan Eccleston – who was bright all afternoon long on the right for North End – almost scored a stunning goal on 76 minutes when he cut inside and just kept running before unleashing a good strike, forcing the ‘keeper to tip over.

PNE did find a deserved equaliser with six minutes to go as Kacper Pasiek put a fantastic ball across the face of goal and there was skipper Mawene at the far post to tap home and earn a point for the Lilywhites.
