Gaffer Looking For Right Balance On Derby Day

30 March 2023

Ryan Lowe is looking for his side to play their football the right way this weekend but also have fire in their bellies as Blackpool come to Deepdale.

Preston North End will host their fiercest rivals at lunchtime on Saturday, looking to get revenge on their opponents who won the reverse fixture at Bloomfield Road.

Asked what the message to the players will be, Ryan said: “It'll be to play our football and play the right way but ultimately have fire in your belly, but have cool heads of course because that’s what derbies bring.

“We’re at home so we need to make sure we put on a performance.

“We’ve been in good form at home of late and we’ve been in good form on the road as well, but ultimately it’s a game that your eyes light up for when you see the local derby against your local rivals.

“These are the games you want to play in and want to perform in, so we’ve just got to make sure we do everything right tactically and let the lads go and take it to fruition on Saturday afternoon.”

Mick McCarthy’s Tangerines will arrive in PR1 desperate for points as they look to escape the drop into League One.

That’s something which the manager and his players will bear in mind to an extent, but ultimately their league position won't determine the outcome of Saturday's derby.

“I think performances and results of late and where they are in the table just go out the window," added Ryan.

“As you’ve seen, anyone can beat anyone in this division. We’re not taking Blackpool lightly just because of where they are.

“It’s a local derby, we’ll respect them for what they are, like we do with every other club, but ultimately there’s bragging rights at stake and we’ve got to make sure that we perform to our highest levels because they are fighting for points.

“They do need points to get out of the bottom three, but ultimately we need points to try and attack and stay in the top half.

“Form, points, systems, results and position in the league goes out the window because it’s that intense of the derby.”

In terms of team news, North End will be without Greg Cunningham, as manager Ryan Lowe confirmed he would be missing for the remainder of the campaign.

But there was more positive news as far as Liam Lindsay is concerned, who has been missing in recent fixtures.

Ryan said: “Linds is fine; he’s trained all week and trained last week as well.

“He was ready before the Middlesbrough game but we didn’t want to risk him so we just felt we’d keep him ticking over and make sure he’s right.

“He’s fine. Ched [Evans] is just doing some stuff in-house. We’ll see how he is today – whether we can get a tune out of him – but everyone’s fully fit it’s just dependent on what we do, apart from Greg and we’ll monitor Ched over the next few days.”
