Ryan On 'Massively Pleasing' Cardiff Victory

11 March 2023

Ryan Lowe has described the feeling of registering another three points at Deepdale as "massively pleasing" as Preston North End secured a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City.

Everton loanee Tom Cannon broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, before substitute Ched Evans added a second in stoppage time to make it six matches unbeaten in the league.

Speaking after the game, Ryan said: "I thought our first half performance was OK, with both teams cagey in terms of retaining the ball and we cancelled each other out.

"At half-time, we changed one or two things with repositioning the wing backs and having the strikers pressing from the front. We started putting more balls in behind to cause them issues and, in the end, it was a decent performance, but more importantly a very good result.

"We felt that whoever scored the first goal would go on and win the game. I thought we were a bit unlucky not to go a goal ahead beforehand as we missed some good chances, with Brad [Potts], Tom and Álvaro [Fernández]. We felt that if we continued to create chances, though, we'd score."

The manager was pleased with the overall performance of the team - especially having been without captain Alan Browne - however, there was special praise for goalscorer Cannon and man of the match, Freddie Woodman.

Ryan commented: "I've got ultimate belief in Tom that he'll score in most games that he plays in, because he's a natural finisher and he will definitely create opportunities.

"For him to keep a cool head in that situation and take that extra touch before shooting was really pleasing, and when it hit the back of the net, I was over the moon."

"Freddie made some fantastic saves and that's 16 clean sheets for him now, which is brilliant. He's got a gashed eye and had three or four stitches at half-time, but there was no way we were going to get him off the pitch.

"He was on the front foot, throwing the ball out quickly and that's what we want - for the tempo to be high and for us to be creating chances.

"Alan's partner is getting induced to have a baby this morning, which is the reason for his omission. Alan was pencilled in to play but we got a call just before he was supposed to arrive to say the baby was due at any time. We're hoping the baby is here and healthy for all the family."

North End are back in action on Tuesday night as they make the journey to South Yorkshire, with Rotherham United the opposition.

"We expect a tough game at Rotherham," said Ryan.

"They are fighting for points and their home form has been OK since Matt Taylor has taken over. They are going to be solid, resolute and hard to beat.

"We'll enjoy this win, which is massively pleasing for everyone associated with the football club. We've got two tough fixtures coming up on the road and we need to put a gameplan together for those."
