Gaffer Confirms Injury Boost For QPR Match

30 November 2023

Ryan Lowe confirmed PNE will be boosted by the return of Ali McCann and Greg Cunningham on Friday night, while Liam Millar could also be involved.

North End have been without Ali in midfield since the beginning of October and Greg since the end of that month, but both are expected to be involved for the visit of Queens Park Rangers.

Canada international Liam picked up a knock last weekend against Cardiff City after coming on as a late substitute and as a result missed the defeat to Middlesbrough.

Ryan said: “Greg will be back in the fold. He’s been training with us so [I don’t know] whether he’ll make the bench, but he’ll definitely be in the squad.

“We’ve got Ali who’s definitely going to be in the squad, whether he makes the bench we’ll have a look at that.

“Liam Millar will be back; he should be fine. Emil [Riis] is not too far away but he’s not going to be with the group just yet.

“He’s in bit-part training but it’s looking rosy in terms of having players back.

“We’ve got 24 or 25 training today which is a big number and one or two will have to go into the gym and do a little bit extra outside of it.

“It’s all good and they’re looking a lot fitter and sharper the lads who are on their way back from injury.”

The gaffer later went on to say Emil should hopefully be back within the next ten days and potentially then back in action around the Christmas period.

Fellow forward Milutin Osmajić may not make the clash at Deepdale, though, having limped off with an injury at the Riverside at the end of the first half.

“We’re going to give him the best possible chance,” Ryan said.

“He had a tight adductor or rec fem [rectus femoris] around his thigh so we’ll monitor him.

“He’s not in too much pain. He’s a warrior, Milly, so if he can get through it he will, so we’ll give him the best possible chance for tomorrow night and see how he goes.

“It’s definitely not serious. We’re going to give him the best possible chance but then we’ll have to potentially see how he is, and if it’s okay to go we’ll go with him and if it’s not we won’t take any chances.”

PNE are coming up against a QPR side currently sat 22nd in the Championship, but that certainly doesn’t tell the full story.

The R’s are under new management in Spaniard Martí Cifuentes and they’ll be buoyed by their 4-2 midweek victory over Stoke City.

Ryan said: “They’ve obviously had some decent performances and they had a good win on Tuesday night.

“We know they’re going to be a lot higher than they have been probably all season and the mood in the camp is probably a little bit more of a buzz.

“We’ve got to make sure we worry about what we do because we’re coming off the back of two tough results and one bad performance is something we want to put right quickly.

“We’re in front of our fans at Deepdale under the lights live on Sky, so we want to make sure we put on a real performance.”
