Match Report: PNE Reserves 0 Barrow 3

14 November 2023

Preston North End reserves were beaten 3-0 in the Central League by an experienced Barrow outfit.

Despite taking the game to their visitors and creating some good opportunities, the young Lilywhites conceded in first-half injury-time when Sam Bellis tapped home.

Sean Etaluku and Ged Garner then extended their side’s advantage in the second half to earn victory.

North End almost got off to a flyer but were denied a first-minute opener by the woodwork, as Josh Seary slammed against the near post from a tight angle.

PNE started well and soon had another opportunity, with Kitt Nelson firing over from 12 yards, before Garner was thwarted by a great reflex save from Tommy Davis from a similar position at the other end.

Ethan Eccleston showed his pace in the 19th minute as he raced down on goal after being slotted through by captain Noah Mawene, but he fired inches wide.

Eccleston was involved again as he played Seary in, and the right wing back saw a thunderous effort tipped wide by goalkeeper Josh Lillis.

Barrow started to create a few chances around the half-hour mark, with arguably the best of them seeing Rory Feely head wide from close range.

North End got away with one in the 42nd minute when an unmarked Courtney Duffus sent an effort wide from eight yards, but the visitors did give themselves a half-time lead when Bellis capitalised on a parry from Davis.

PNE were presented with a great opportunity in the early stages of the second half when goalkeeper Lillis picked up a back-pass and Seary had an effort blocked by a number of bodies from the following indirect free-kick, six yards out.

Davis came up with three impressive stops for his side in the following ten minutes to deny Ben Whitfield from close range and Bellis twice, with the last of those saves being a remarkable reaction stop to tip over the bar.

There was nothing the ‘keeper could do, though, when a cutback found Etaluku lurking just outside the area, and he slammed low under Davis.

Barrow’s third came in the 74th minute at the end of a rapid counter attack which started with the ‘keeper and ended with a looping header from Garner into the far corner.

Pasiek thought he’d pulled one back eight minutes from time as he looked to blaze a left-footed strike over Lillis, but the veteran stuck out a strong left hand to tip over.

Davis was called into action on a couple of occasions before time was up, and Barrow left Springfields with a 3-0 victory.

PNE line-up: Davis; Wilkinson, McGhee, Pasiek; Seary, N.Mawene, Horan, Khan (Tarry, 63); Nelson (Goldsmith, 75), Carroll (Gairns, 75); Eccleston (T.Mawene, 63). Sub not used: Critchley.
