Gaffer Confirms Ched Evans Given All-Clear

19 October 2023

Manager Ryan Lowe has confirmed Ched Evans has been given the all-clear for a return to action after seven months out.

The striker developed a serious medical condition earlier this year which meant he was facing potentially life-changing consequences.

However, after surgery and months of rehabilitation, he is now in full-contact training and back in contention to feature.

The gaffer said: “It’s absolutely fantastic news, not just for me as the manager, but the football club, all the staff, the players, himself, and his family.

“It’s big news because it was the news we were wanting. The news we were dreading was that he’d have to wait another four or five weeks.

“But the bone’s now healed, he’s been given the go ahead to crack on and he certainly has done that because he’s been like a kid in a sweet shop all week in training.

“Fair play to the fitness department, the physio department, and the coaches. The physios have had to look after him physically and mentally, and the fitness coaches have had to do the same, but more importantly Ched’s had to go through a lot and we’re just pleased that he’s going to be available at the weekend.

“He's had loads of time with the lads and loads of time away because we wanted him to not get too frustrated with himself. When there’s a ball in front of him he wanted to play. He wanted to kick it, and any balls in the air he wanted to head it.

“We’ve had to be careful with him. He’s a real solid leader as we well know so it’ll be nice to have him around.”

PNE were also hopeful fellow long-term absentee Emil Riis might return to action following the international break, but he’s had a setback which may add another few weeks on to his return date.

Elsewhere, Calvin Ramsay is set to return to Euxton on Monday after completing his rehabilitation with parent club Liverpool, while Ali McCann and Jack Whatmough will miss the weekend through calf and hamstring injuries respectively.

Defender Andrew Hughes is also likely to be unavailable, while skipper Alan Browne and Jordan Storey have fully recovered from illness and will be in contention to feature against Millwall.

The visitors to Deepdale on Saturday have had a change in the dugout during the past 24 hours, with Gary Rowett leaving the Lions – who currently sit 15th in the Championship – by mutual consent.

Ryan said: “It’s tough isn’t it when situations like that happen, but they’ve still got the same personnel and they’re going to have the same coaches.

“The manager obviously left and maybe he [the caretaker, Adam Barrett] might tweak one or two things, but we’ll wait and see on the day.

“We’ve just got to prepare as much as we possibly can and expect the unexpected. So we’ll put the gameplan together and then we’ll hopefully take it to fruition, and what will be will be in terms of any change in formation or personnel.

“We know the squad, we know what they’re about, we know how they play, and we’re expecting the same type of Millwall team that’s on the front foot, very aggressive, and go back to front very quickly.

“They’ve got a formula that works so we’ve got to make sure we stand up to that.”
