Rest In Peace, Sir Bobby Charlton

21 October 2023

Everyone at Preston North End is deeply saddened to learn of the news that the club's former player and manager, Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away at the age of 86.

The thoughts of everyone at the football club are with Sir Bobby's friends, family, and loved ones at this difficult time.

The 1966 England World Cup winner – considered one of the true England greats – became manager at Deepdale in 1973, and later brought former Three Lions teammate Nobby Stiles with him as player-coach.

Sir Bobby himself soon switched his role to player-manager, before moving on in August 1975, as he came towards the end of his long, distinguished career in the game.

The footballing legend is, of course, best known for being part of the England side which won the World Cup on home turf in 1966, and also for his 17-year playing association with Manchester United, for whom he made a mighty 758 appearances.

Not only was he a terrific sportsman, but an even better person, too, becoming one of the most well-respected men in the game.

Sadly, Sir Bobby was diagnosed with dementia in 2020 and on the morning of 21st October 2023 passed away surrounded by his family.

Rest in peace, Sir Bobby.
