Match Report: Salford City 4 PNE Reserves 0

2 April 2024

Ten-man Preston North End were beaten 4-0 by Salford City in the Central League.

Harry Showman scored an early opener for the hosts before Kaedyn Kamara received a straight red in the 37th minute.

Further goals from Jez Davies, Ben Collins and Jacob Ramplin took the game away from PNE in the second half.

Theo Mawene – who has been training with the first team recently – had the first effort of the day inside five minutes, with goalkeeper Joel Torrance coming out on top.

PNE didn’t get too much joy after that moment, though, and they fell behind on 14 minutes when Showman turned Kyrell Malcolm’s cross beyond Tommy Davis.

After Davis was called into action on a couple of occasions, North End’s job was made more difficult when Kamara was dismissed for a lunging challenge on the edge of the area 37 minutes in.

Salford would have gone into the break with a greater advantage if it wasn’t for a brilliant close-range stop from Davis to prevent Showman doubling his tally.

North End made two changes at the break but soon had a big task on their hands when Davies tapped in a cross from a few yards out in the 47th minute.

The Ammies found a third nine minutes later and in some style, as captain Collins volleyed into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Salford couldn’t believe they didn’t have another in the 63rd minute as they struck the woodwork twice in the same attack, firstly through Showman and then Jacob Lara on the rebound.

The hosts did find a fourth, though, in the 77th minute as Ramplin received the ball with his back to goal and turned to slam past Davis to seal a convincing victory.

PNE line-up: Davis (Stowell, 81); Brindle, Wilkinson, McGhee; Eccleston (Tarry, 45), Carroll (Garrigan, 67), Kamara, Pasiek; Rodriguez-Gentile (Gairns, 67), T.Mawene; Goldsmith (Critchley, 45).
