Freddie Stresses Importance Of Backing Up Wins

8 February 2024

Freddie Woodman says Preston North End need to return to backing up their wins, starting this weekend against Cardiff City.

PNE had a superb start to the campaign, going unbeaten in eight matches, and within that run came six successive victories.

Since that winning streak, though, North End have won consecutive fixtures only once, but they have a chance to get back to that in South Wales, following last Saturday’s victory against Ipswich Town.

Freddie said: “The place is buzzing really. It’s always nice coming back into work after a win and it’s been the same this week really.

“It was a great result against Ipswich but I think we have to get back to what we were doing at the start of the season by backing wins up with another win, and we’ll look to do that on Saturday.

“I believe we can do it because we have done it. I feel like we can and I feel like we have to, because it’s no good just winning one game. We need to continue getting three points.”

North End’s No.1 knows the reception he’s going to get every time he steps foot in Cardiff, having spent time on loan with their fierce rivals Swansea City earlier in his career.

Heckles from the crowd aren’t something that bothers him, though. If anything, he likes having those exchanges with opposition fans.

“I do quite enjoy it,” he said. “I think it’s part of the game. I think the media and everyone can get caught up in saying it’s not right, but I think if it’s done in the right way and both parties can take it then I think the game needs it really.

“I think it’d be a bit sad if we weren’t able to give each other stick. I always try to give something back but it’s a little bit harder if you’re on the losing side. Sometimes you just have to suck it up.

“If someone’s going to give it to you all game and you get a positive result then they need to know I’m going to turn around and I’m going to give it back to them. If it’s done in the right way, I think it’s what the game needs.”

In Cardiff City, PNE are facing a side sat two points below them in the table and struggling for form on home turf.

They go into the weekend on the back of a good win away at Watford, and North End’s shot-stopper gave an insight into how he’s preparing for the trip to South Wales, compared to the rest of the team.

“I think it’s totally different really,” said Freddie. “As a goalkeeper you’re not in the game all the time so we pretty much practise trying to nail the basics of the game in training.

“We’ll watch the attacking players of the opposite team and you sort of find certain players do certain things more, and you can sort of expect it come gameday.

“It’s not going to make a massive difference but it might give you a one or two per cent that you need. You go into the game for a Saturday feeling fully prepared.

“I always feel like that’s a nice feeling. When you know you’ve prepared well all week you take confidence from that. You can almost fall back on that in the game.”
