Gaffer Praises ‘Outstanding’ Comeback In Blackburn Rovers Draw

17 February 2024

Ryan Lowe felt his side were “outstanding” to come back from two goals down against Blackburn Rovers to earn a point at Deepdale.

The visitors raced into a two-goal lead inside the opening 23 minutes of the match, before goals from Robbie Brady and Emil Riis levelled the clash going into the break.

PNE were the side on top from that point but couldn’t quite find a winner, as they extended the unbeaten run to five matches.

Ryan said: “Reflecting on it it’s a good point. We can’t give any side in the division a two-goal headstart, which we did. There’s no blame culture from me to the players. They were outstanding to get back into the game.

“I think that gave us the kick up the backside we needed because it was a little bit flat for us with the same team out again [from the win against Middlesbrough].

“We worked so hard, and were physically and mentally tired, but they gave it their all. When we got it back to 2-2 I said to the lads at half-time, ‘There’s only one team that’s gonna go and win this game and that’s us.’

“I think it looked like that as well. We were on the front foot, and made the changes to go and win it. We had a couple of moments.

“I’m just pleased the lads are still in a rich vein of form and to come from goals behind in a Lancashire derby is massively pleasing."

It was a stunning goal which got North End back in the game, as the ball came out to Brady on the right and the former Burnley man bent it beautifully into the top corner.

That was his first goal for the club in what was his second consecutive start, and he was rewarded for his performance with the man of the match award.

Ryan said: “I’m buzzing for Rob. He hasn’t played as many games as he’d like. We’ve had to keep the top-up group fit, strong and ready.

“That’s back-to-back games on Wednesday, Saturday. He’s got an unbelievable delivery and when the ball fell to him I thought, ‘Go on just hit it’, and he’s smashed it right into the top corner and that’s what Rob can give you in set plays, dead ball situations and running on to balls.

“He’s got that quality so I'm really pleased for him. Once we got the goal we were in the ascendency and there was only one team in it, and we potentially could have had another chance at 2-2 to go in front but it wasn’t to be.”
