Sutcliffe Excited By Deepdale Opportunity

2 May 2022

PNE Women forward Nicole Sutcliffe is looking ahead with excitement to their final game of the season at Deepdale this weekend, after the women’s team concluded their league campaign with a 3-1 victory against Penrith AFC Ladies on Sunday.

The Lilywhites went behind early on to the Cumbrian side but responded well, with Sutcliffe combining with fellow forward Lucy Swift for the equaliser, with further strikes from Olivia Askam and Charlotte Greenwood winning it for the home side before half-time.

While that rounded off league matters for PNEWFC, there is still one fixture to go with the visit of Hindley Juniors Women for a friendly at Deepdale next Sunday – a game that, as a PNE herself, Sutcliffe is looking forward to with anticipation.

She told PNE.Com: “I’m a PNE fan myself, I’ve had a season ticket for many years, so I’m really excited to play. I’ve never played on the pitch before, I’ve just been in the stands, so I’m really excited. Me and my family are going to be there and I’m looking forward to it.”

Fourth position had already been sealed for North End in the league but Sutcliffe still felt it was important to finish the season in positive fashion with the win against Penrith.

“It was a good win, obviously we’re pleased to finish the season on a high. We could have been better in parts, like keeping the ball, but some parts we did well, like one-touch passing

“We didn’t take all our chances – I missed today – we’ll work on that next season, but overall, I think we worked as a team and played well.

“Once we scored and then Liv got the penalty, I thought we were in control of the game. They had gone 1-0 up but as soon as we got the second goal we were in control of the game and we saw it out.”

On combining with Swift for her team-mate to equalise, she continued: “Swifty is always open, she’s a good runner. It’s good to get Swifty on the ball because she always puts them away or tries to make the runs. She’s a fast player. It was good overall to get the win.”
