PNECET Successful With National Lottery Heritage Application

19 July 2023

Preston North End Community and Education Trust [PNECET] is excited to launch a brand-new heritage project, Invincibles. The three-year programme will use football heritage to empower greater social mobility amongst vulnerable communities in Preston.

Marking the 135th anniversary of the original Preston North End Invincibles in 1888/89, the project is funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The programme will create new jobs and volunteering opportunities to support three activation strands, promoting improved access to heritage, intergenerational learning, and greater wellbeing:
  • ‘Inspired to Learn’: Children from local primary schools will access a contextualised education programme that uses club heritage to champion equality and diversity. Children will learn about ‘Invincibles’ goalkeeper Arthur Wharton, widely recognised as the first black professional footballer and the historic Dick Kerr Ladies. Other strand activities will include partnering local secondary schools with care homes offering a multigeneration approach to heritage.
  • ‘Inspired to Lead’: An intergenerational volunteering programme equipping young people aged 16-24 and older people with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to become ‘Invincibles’ Heritage Ambassadors, working alongside funded staff to improve the learning experience for participants.
  • ‘Inspired to Engage’: A programme of accessible community heritage activities ranging from ‘football memories’ and mobile memorabilia exhibitions in care homes to focused heritage preservation.
Preston North End has been at the heart of the Preston community for 142 years. As an original founder club of the English Football League in 1888, ‘The Lilywhites’ won the first two league titles, becoming known as the original ‘Invincibles’ after achieving their second league success undefeated. In the years that followed, like many post-industrial northern communities, Preston has faced economic and social challenges following the decline of textile manufacturing. Its football team has become a source of strength and happiness, with some of the sport’s greatest names including Sir Tom Finney and Bill Shankly entertaining generation after generation.

Working with local partners such as but not limited to, the National Football Museum and Preston Historical Society, PNECET aim to digitalise and utilise archived documents and memorabilia going back to the club’s original formation. A key focus within Invincibles is to digitalise these documents and make them accessible for future generations to learn about the club’s history.

Whilst Invincibles community activities will be accessible for all, the delivery team is focused on using the project’s ‘football inspired’ offer to create new participation opportunities for those currently underrepresented in heritage activities. This will include working with children attending primary and secondary schools located in communities of high deprivation through ‘Inspired to Learn’ activities along with creating personal development opportunities through volunteering for young people affected by mental ill-health and unemployment and older people living with loneliness. Through ‘Inspired to Engage’ activities, participation pathways will be established.
