Sporting Memories members at Preston North End Community and Education Trust have celebrated the fourth anniversary of the group’s inception, with a celebratory event in the Sir Tom Finney Lounge at Deepdale.
Sporting Memories is a registered charity tailored to aid individuals aged 50 and above, offering reminiscence sessions and gentle physical activities to support those dealing with dementia, depression and loneliness. We also welcome anyone interested in engaging sports related conversations.
The sessions initially commenced at Finney House Care Home in October 2019, briefly relocating to Deepdale in January 2020. Due to the onset of the Coronavirus Outbreak, Sporting Memories transitioned to online delivery for two years. The Sporting Memories programme is now being delivered in-person at Deepdale, every Tuesday from 11am until 12.30pm.
Health and Wellbeing Coordinator, Grace Birtwell said: “Our Sporting Memories group has been a great success over the last four years, and proven extremely popular amongst the community.
“Today, our members have enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining and varied morning. The members had the chance to reminisce over the last four years, looking back at some of the excellent guest speakers we have had, alongside the captivating quizzes, light physical activities, and other events that have taken place over the last 12 months.
“The members enjoyed a few games of bingo, as well as some quizzes and brain teasers. We also held a raffle at the event, where members could win a variety of different PNEFC related prizes. We raised over £350 for both PNECET and The Sporting Memories Foundation.”
The dedicated volunteers at Sporting Memories have been the driving force behind the programme’s success over the past four years. Their commitment allows us to consistently bring in captivating guest speakers and connect with our members, ensuring they have something to anticipate every Tuesday.
Sessions are held every Tuesday morning, from 11am until 12.30pm, in Sir Tom Finney Lounge at Deepdale. If this sounds like something either yourself or somebody you know may be interested in, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
