Match Report: PNE Women 3 Altrincham FC Women 1

14 September 2023

Preston North End Women secured a 3-1 victory over Altrincham FC Women in the first qualifying round of the Women's FA Cup.

The game started off slow with both teams trying to figure out how to play the game.

Altrincham were louder than the Lilywhites and this caught them not communicating but they had faith when Sam Ball got a free-kick.

This was a little further out than usual but within her ability. The shot shattered the crossbar and landed the wrong side of the line as they were unlucky not to take the lead.

A few minutes later, the away side took the lead after a well-worked counterattack saw them get the goal.

Being on the back foot, PNE had to get a goal to get back into the game and they didn't manage this in the first half, as it stayed 0-1 at half-time.

In the second half, PNE needed goals or they were out of the FA Cup.

After a half-time talk from management, it was a completely different team that walked out despite no changes at half-time.

Madison Hadley stepped up to take a corner which found Caitlin Wolfenden's head with momentum and it flyed into the net for the equaliser they needed.

Not long after Ball did get her goal after an almost identical goal to the first one, as Hadley played the ball in from a corner to Ball's head this time.

Now in front, PNE started playing with confidence and Belle Quigley, who made her first team debut, showed her ability on the pitch having a very good game and didn't stop running.

Another player who made her mark was Emma Dodsworth, who made her second appearance for the first team and assisted Hadley's first goal of the game and the third overall.

After playing the perfect cross into Hadley's feet, who slotted it in the back of the net calmly and celebrated with her family friend and young fan Tyler who has been supporting the girls all season.

Justine Elliott got Player of the Match after making some great saves and being strong in the net, as well as her goal kicks putting the opposition defence under pressure each time.

The next game for the Lilywhites is Accrington away at the Wham Stadium on Sunday 17th September.
