Alex Wood joined the club’s academy at U12 level in March 2012, signing on scholarship terms four years later.
The two-footed midfielder, who was born in Burnley, is most often seen playing on the right-wing. But his hard-working nature and versatility has seen him fill a number of other roles to great effect, featuring on the opposite flank, central midfield and even at right-back.
Wood was one of the stars of last season’s run to the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals, netting an injury-time winner in a 3-2 victory against AFC Wimbledon at Deepdale in February.
He is another of the second-year crop to hail from a footballing background. Wood’s granddad, John Connelly, played for Burnley and Manchester United in the 1960s and was even a part of England’s World Cup winning squad of 1966.
