In January 2022, Preston North End fought off strong competition to bring Cameron Archer to the club on loan from Aston Villa until the end of the season.

The young forward didn't take any time at all to adapt to his new surroundings, scoring just ten minutes after coming off the bench for his debut against West Bromwich Albion, while his second goal for the club followed on his second start, netting the winner against Hull City.

His form only continued from there, and arguably his most important goal - one which will go down in history - was his strike against Blackpool which proved to be the match-winner in the Lancashire derby.

Goalscoring was what helped him catch the eye back at his parent club Villa, bagging a hat-trick on his first senior start for the club against Barrow in the second round of the EFL Cup, before scoring at Stamford Bridge in the following round.

Archer, who spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with Solihull Moors, made his Premier League debut in September 2021, while he continued to bang goals in for Villa’s U21s side in the EFL Trophy.

Training alongside the likes of Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins, and working under manager Steven Gerrard, was no doubt developing his game, but Villa gave the 20-year-old the greenlight to go out on loan to PNE and get more game time.
