Having captained the U18s for over a year beforehand, Melle Meulensteen was rewarded with a professional contract in April 2017.
The midfielder, capable of playing in both a deeper or more advanced position in the centre, joined PNE in 2014, embarking on his scholarship a year later after previously featuring for Manchester United’s youth set-up.
The Dutchman, who hails from the city of Nijmegen, is something of a specialist from set-pieces. He made a habit of setting up his teammates from free-kicks last season, as well as proving an incredibly reliable force from the penalty spot – netting nine out of nine in all competitions, two of which came in the FA Youth Cup.
Like the fellow academy graduates of this season, Meulensteen has frequently trained with the first team over the last year. He is the son of former Man United coach Rene Meulensteen, who has also managed Fulham and more recently Maccabi Haifa.
