Reaction Pleases Simon Grayson

19 April 2016

After admitting his anger to PNEPlayerHD following the draw to MK Dons at the weekend, Simon Grayson was pleased with how his players responded tonight.

The all yellow Lilywhites battled back from two goals down to secure a point at St Andrew's in the last 20 minutes.

North End were staring defeat in the face after Brum striker Clayton Donaldson grabbed two goals in each half, his first coming in the 13th minute after reacting first to Anders Lindegaard's parried save; his second coming from almost identical circumstances reacting first to another rebound, but this time from Chris Kirkland with the Danish goalkeeper coming off in the first half.

However, with 17 minutes left on the clock, Alan Browne got the ball rolling with a neat finish from a Tom Clarke cross to half the deficit.

With just a minute remaining of normal time, a loose ball fell to Greg Cunningham in the box, and the defender fired home from close range to send the North End faithful back up the M6 with a point to show for their team's efforts.

"I thought we did fairly well from start to finish to be fair," said the manager post-match. "When you look at the overall game, we've had more of the ball, we've had more shots on goal, we've hit the post a couple of times and ultimately we've come from two goals down to show great spirit and character which I know we've got in abundance.

"We're disappointed with the goals that we've conceded but ultimately we showed a lot of spirit out there today.

"Both goalkeepers maybe disappointed that they haven't parried the ball away for their goals but you can turn around and say maybe the defenders should react quicker to the second goal but these things happen and we've managed to get our just rewards with the two goals to earn a point."

Whilst speaking to PNEPlayerHD, the gaffer provided a fitness update on the two injured players who were took off in the first half.

He continued: "Marnick [Vermijl] was caught in a tackle and Anders [Lindegaard] went down with his shoulder so we'll have to see how we go with that one. It wasn't ideal because when you're chasing a game, you want options available but we changed the shape to a 3-5-2 and people who went into those positions certainly contributed."
