Roberts Pleased With Defensive Display

1 December 2016

Goalkeeper Callum Roberts was delighted to get a cleansheet at Deepdale as PNE progressed in the FA Youth Cup.

Roberts made some vital saves in the second half to secure a 1-0 win over Sheffield United to earn a place in the fourth round.

Speaking of the game, the 18-year-old said: "We knew we were going to come up against it, we had done our homework and we knew it was going to be a physical game.

"We had a gameplan and we stuck to it and I think that is what got us through the game and it's great to get a cleansheet.

"In some games recently we haven't started games well and we wanted to get a good start to get the momentum going and get them on the back foot.

"It was a bonus to get that early goal and it was something for us to defend from to go on and win so it was really good.

The young 'keeper was pleased with both the North End defence and his own performance and praised the back four who contributed to a cleansheet.

"I knew as soon as we scored that they were going to come at us and they would put pressure on us but in the second half when the legs get tired that's where I need to step up and dominate the box and I feel that I did that to a good standard.

"I am quite good at one-on-ones and I would usually favour myself, it needs to be done and when you save one it's the best feeling you can get.

"I was really pleased with the back four, it was brilliant to see that they could cope with the pressure. We worked well as a team, the communication was outstanding from them, they all played for each other."
