Gaffer Aiming To Build On Positive Result

13 February 2017

Manager Simon Grayson is hoping to take the momentum from Saturday's win over Brentford into Tuesday night.

North End host Birmingham City at Deepdale on Tuesday, and the gaffer, who picked up his 100th win as PNE boss at the weekend, will be looking to add to that tally against Gianfranco Zola's side.

"We need to try and make sure we build off Saturday's performance because back to back victories in the Championship are hard to get but ultimately if you do it can be very rewarding.

After a terrific performance against the Bees at the weekend, selecting the same team wouldn't be out of the question for the gaffer, though he admits it could be difficult with such a quick turnaround in games.

"There will be many different things going through your mind in terms of picking the team to put out. Injuries will play a part, fatigue is another thing, but the player who played on Saturday will be wanting to play again and they will think they have done enough to play again.

"Whatever team we put out due to injuries etc. then hopefully it is going to be good enough to go and win the game.

It hasn't been plain sailing for Tuesday's opposition in recent weeks under new manager Gianfranco Zola, but the PNE boss has plenty of respect for the former Chelsea man.

Speaking of his opposite number at Birmingham, Grayson said: "I like Gianfranco, I have got a lot of respect for him, he's managed in the Premier League and at other clubs and he's a really nice bloke, and I played against him as well.

"They obviously decided to go for a change in manager a few months ago now and Gary lost his job.

"That raised a few eyebrows but these things happen in football but they made that decision and what we are going to try and do it capitalise on the run that they are on at the moment but ultimately build on our result from the weekend.

"We are certainly aware that they have got some good players and the effect that they can have on the game.

"Looking at Gianfranco's comments over the last few weeks there hasn't been too much in the games that they have been involved in and that's just the nature of the Championship.

"Fine margins can be the difference between winning, losing and drawing games so we know what to expect. There are a lot of strengths and weaknesses for us to analyse, for us and for them but hopefully we can come out on top."
