Looking At: Barnsley

18 July 2014

Next up in the penultimate instalment of the 'Looking At' series is Barnsley who were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship last season after finishing in 23rd place.

Founded: 1887
Nickname: The Tykes
Stadium: Oakwell
Manager: Danny Wilson
Last Season: 23rd in the Championship

It will be the first time the Tykes compete in League One since the 2005/06 season, when they were promoted via the Play-Offs.

The Yorkshire side started last season under the management of David Flitcroft, and it was a challenge from the off - losing three of their first four games, and it wasn't until their win over Huddersfield Town five games into the 2013/14 season that they recorded their first victory.

Though hopes may have been lifted, the Tykes then went on to secure just one win in their next twelve matches resulting in the sacking of Flitcroft.

Micky Mellon took temporary charge before current manager Danny Wilson was appointed in December last year, but he could only muster six wins from Barnsley's 26 league games, and with a total of 25 defeats, the Tykes ended their eight year stay in the second tier of English football, with defeat to Middlesbrough on the second to last game of the Championship calendar.

With his first full season in charge this year, Danny Wilson will be hoping to turn Barnsley's fortunes around, and target a quick return to the Championship.

Their star man last season, Chris O'Grady was the Club's top scorer with 13, and he’s already attracted interest from a range of Championship clubs who want to sign the 28-year-old striker.

North End will be wary of the talent in the Barnsley team with a squad of mainly Championship players, but Simon Grayson's side will be hoping to get one over on the newcomers when they face them on Boxing Day for the first time since 2011.
