Preston Schools’ Cup Final Held At Deepdale

16 May 2016

Seven matches, 14 teams and over 150 school kids took to the Deepdale turf for the Dick Clegg Preston Schools’ Cup final at the weekend.

Each one of the seven matches were sponsored as school teams battled it out for silverware from U11 to U16 level.

The action kicked off at a sunny Deepdale as early as 9am with Archbishop Temple defeating Our Lady’s Catholic High 4-2 in the U14 girls Dixon Cup.

At U11 level, Our Lady & St Edward’s RC Primary took home the Harold Slater Shield beating Broughton-in-Amounderness CoE Primary 1-0 before Broughton High won the U12s Mick Baxter Cup with a slender 1-0 victory over Corpus Christi.

Broughton High were victorious for a second and third time; firstly in the U13s Jack May Cup where a 4-1 win over Our Lady’s Catholic High School saw them lift the trophy before beating the same opposition at U14 level in the William Dawson Cup.

The penultimate game saw the spoils shared with Ashton Community College and Corpus Christi drawing 0-0 in the U15 Ord/Hargreaves Cup.

The finale saw Archbishop Temple lift the Lucas Shield trophy with a 3-1 victory over Ashton Community Sports College in the U16 category.

Co-organiser, Paul Whelan, a teacher at Sherwood Primary spoke to the Club website on a real 'community' driven day.

“On behalf of all the organisers, we’d like to thank Preston North End and the community department. The whole day had a real community and relaxed feel about it," said Paul.

“With teams coming and going, I know it can be a confusing and stressful day, but the stewarding was great and the whole day ran really smoothly. This doesn’t happen by accident and I know a lot went on behind the scenes to ensure this.

“It certainly was a community day and I’m sure 200 children playing on the hallowed turf is something they and their families will never forget.”

PNE's schools' ambassador for 2015/16 Bailey Wright who was unfortunately on International duty so couldn't attend said of the event: "Not only is hosting the Schools' Cup at Deepdale a great idea, it's also a great opportunity for the kids to play on an actual Championship pitch.

"I would have loved to have been given the chance to represent my school on a professional pitch when I was growing up; to have so many kids participating and so many teams playing all in one day is a credit to the organisers who have obviously worked hard to get this done."
