Ben Highlights Importance Of Fine Margins Ahead Of Bristol City

11 January 2024

Ben Whiteman feels fine margins are going against Preston North End at the moment, and as a team they need to turn things back in their favour.

PNE began the Championship campaign with four victories at Deepdale, winning each of those by a one-goal margin, however since a defeat to West Brom at the end of September it’s been two wins in eight on home turf.

Within that spell have been some hard-to-take results, including a draw against Southampton and a late defeat to Cardiff City, where critical moments in matches went the way of the visitors.

Speaking ahead of the Bristol City match, Ben said: “If you look at the Southampton game that was a kick in the teeth, and the Cardiff one where they scored two late goals.

“I think them moments are massive, but like I said before hopefully we can put on a performance and get a result this weekend.

“If you look at football, that’s what it is. It’s the fine margins. We’ve got to put them right and get them in our favour.

“Bristol City have obviously changed their manager. They play a different way and we’re going to come up with a gameplan of how to compete against that and hopefully we can do that this weekend.”

The Lilywhites return to Deepdale following defeat in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup, away to Chelsea.

PNE put their Premier League hosts under huge amounts of pressure during the first half in particular and on another day may have gone ahead, but it ended up being Mauricio Pochettino’s side who progressed.

Ben said: “If you look at the first 45 minutes I think we really frustrated Chelsea.

“You look at the way they came out in the second half and had to change things up. Hopefully we can do that for 90 minutes.

“The scenes after the game were unbelievable and right the way through the game you could only hear one set of fans. They were outstanding.

“We don’t take it for granted. They spend their hard-earned money coming to watch us and they were loud and proud and hopefully we can do that this weekend.

“If you look at any great team, one of the main reasons behind it is the fans and we need to keep them on side.

“Performances and results do that and hopefully we can do that this weekend.”
