Gaffer Hoping Sickness Bug Has Been And Gone

25 January 2024

Ryan Lowe is hopeful the sickness bug which hit Preston North End last week is now behind them.

PNE were missing Duane Holmes, Freddie Woodman and Milutin Osmajić against Leeds United, with other players also suffering the effects of the illness in the week’s build-up.

They’re back in training, though, and are expected to be available for Saturday’s trip to Millwall.

Ryan said: “Fred’s back in the building so he had a start-up day yesterday. Milly had a start-up day yesterday and Duano’s the same.

“It hit the camp a little bit hard I must say. It’s a horrible little bug that’s gone round. I’ve felt the effects of it myself but I don’t have to run out there and play 90 minutes of football.

“A couple of the staff have had it, but they’re all fit and healthy now and getting through it.

“Hopefully that’s the last of it and hopefully they’ll pull through training today and tomorrow to be ready for the weekend.”

Two men who won’t travel to the capital are Jack Whatmough and Ched Evans, as they continue their respective recoveries from injury, with the former closer to a return than the Welsh striker.

Last weekend it was two up top for North End with Emil Riis partnering the in-form Will Keane, and the boss admitted he’s content with playing two strikers.

Whoever does get the nod will come up against a Millwall side expected to play differently than in the reverse fixture, given that Joe Edwards has taken over as head coach in recent months.

Ryan said: “They’ll set up a lot different than they have done under Gary Rowett. Gary did a fantastic job there for many years. It was a different style and a little bit more direct and playing in your half.

“They’ve still got that effect of course because they’ve still got the personnel, but Joe is a coach who’s coached at England level and Premier League level, and he wants to put his own stamp and authority down on it.

“They’re playing a lot more football so we’ll just need to plan for Millwall a little bit differently. First and second balls – we’re still going to have to plan for that – but we’re also going to have to plan for tactical changes and how they’re going to plan and where they’re going to try and play.

“As I’ve said, they’ve got a good coach who’s going to want to stamp his authority and style of play down on the team which you can see evidently already what he’s trying to do.

“We know we’re in for a tough encounter footballing wise and physicality wise definitely.”
